11 Tips For The 11+

Welcome!

If you’re here, it’s probably because you are interested in supporting your child with their 11+ exams. Great idea!

The 11+ can seem confusing and overwhelming for parents and children alike. Don’t worry: I am here to help.

Wanting your child to attend a grammar school is a wonderful notion: grammar schools have excellent reputations and are renowned for offering first class education at absolutely no cost! However, this does mean that competition for places can be intense.

Children who attend grammar schools are being set up for a potentially wonderful future. Due to their selective nature, it is often said that grammar school pupils make faster progress than those attending comprehensives.

As a result, grammar schools tend to rank very highly in performance league tables.

The very fact that you’re here on my website means you want the best for your child. Nobody can predict the future but it is often said that grammar school pupils go on to have very successful university careers and obtain high position jobs. Did you know that both Benedict Cumberbatch and David Attenborough were grammar school students once upon a time?!

On a personal note, I attended Southend High School for Girls (a grammar school in Essex) and then went on to study for my PGCE at the University of Cambridge.

Writing for The House of Commons Briefing Paper January 2020, Shadi Danechi found that ‘GCSE attainment at grammars is, on average, much better than in non-selective schools.’

More good news: in 2014, the Daily Telegraph published a study that found that girls who attend grammar schools will, on average, earn 20% more in their future careers than girls who attend comprehensive schools.

The same study also found that male grammar school pupils were more likely to gain a university degree than boys who attend comprehensive schools.

It certainly seems that the sky's the limit for grammar school pupils! I’d be delighted to explain how I can help you and your child to prepare…

Deputy Headteacher (Retired)

I had the pleasure of working with Jennifer for seven years, although her teaching career has been much longer. Jennifer’s particular strengths lie in working with Year 5 and Year 6 pupils where she was judged to be an outstanding practitioner.

Jennifer has the skills to support her pupils well, building on trust and the understanding of their individual and specific needs, enabling them to aim high and reach their full potential.

Furthermore her many years of teaching experience have seen her confidently develop lessons that are fun, while suitably challenging, enabling pupils to gain confidence, improve attainment and strengthen a deeper love of learning.

Beyond the classroom Jennifer led 11+ clubs for a number of years, supporting pupils to develop the skills required to pass the 11+ test, enabling them to enter selective schools in our area. For her pupils with additional needs Jennifer is caring and understanding, helping her pupils take steps, however small and celebrating achievements along the way.

I have always admired Jennifer’s total professionalism and seen for myself the progress and achievements her pupils have made.

Thoroughly recommend Miss Bromley for tuition - she has a way with children that brings out the best in them as she genuinely loves what she does and has your child’s best interest at heart.

My son flourished being taught by her and has gone on to achieve great GCSE results too.

To anyone considering tuition services for their child, I can thoroughly recommend Jen Bromley.

She is a fantastic tutor with an exceptional talent for clearly explaining subject matter and helping children to develop their skills. My daughters really enjoyed learning with Jen as her teaching is focused, effective and thorough and she is great at building a strong relationship and checking understanding.

As a result, both my daughters really gained in confidence in their subjects and their knowledge and learning techniques developed to a great extent. Jen has a depth of knowledge, is a skilled communicator, and her materials and sessions are carefully considered and planned for great results.

Highly recommend!

I have known Jennifer in a professional capacity for many years now. She is an outstanding teacher with proven results owing to her personal tailored approach, guaranteeing the best outcome for any child.

Jen’s experience in the classroom has led her to know what is expected from children of all ages but her skill teaching online, brings learning to life for pupils in their own homes. This makes the tutoring experience much easier for parents and much less stressful for children who remain in their own environment.

Give this new approach a try, you won’t be disappointed.

I was recommended to Jen to help my eldest son prepare for his 11+. Her passion, dedication and commitment was second to none and you could tell straight away that she really had the desire in wanting him to succeed.

Jen explained the whole 11+ process clearly and thoroughly. My son passed with flying colours and I didn’t hesitate to ask Jen again when it was my youngest sons time to take his 11+.

I couldn’t recommend Jen highly enough.
